Dedication, Determination, and Discipline
This You Tube video of a Michael Jackson Tribute by Ohio State's
Marching Unit epitomizes the three D's that a person needs to be successful in
life. Whether you are student, teacher, Doctor,
or artist. The three D's are:
Determination, Dedication, and Discipline.
Webster defines determination as "a
quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is
difficult.” Otherwise known as one part
of GRIT. Success is only achieved when
we overcome what we once thought was not achievable. Although our difficulties or challenges may
be different, the ability to push through is necessary if we want to see that
rainbow at the end of a storm.
Dedication is defined by Webster as "
a feeling of very strong support for or loyalty to someone or something: the quality
or state of being dedicated to a person, group, cause, etc. Dedication to anything requires sacrifice and
requires us to be present in the MOMENT.
When we are distracted, we cannot be dedicated. The trick is making time for it, a must for
success.
The last and most important D: Discipline
is defined by Webster as "training that corrects, molds, or perfects the
mental faculties or moral character or self-control.” Although there are many definitions for
discipline these two are most appropriate for success. You either put in the time or you do not. You either want it or you do not. Discipline requires you to put in the time
(over years) to perfect your craft, deepen your learning, and become a better
person.
The question is how willing are you to passionately engage in what you are doing to meet your goals in life. It is the different between a dreamer and a maker! The dreamer dreams but never achieves. The maker dreams, plans, executes, and celebrates both their successes and failures. Which one are you?
