Recess: A Relic of Childhood

http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2012/05/09/30elder.h31.html I would have never thought that the concept of recess would become an afterthought in education. As a adult whose formative years were between 1978 (Kindergarten)- 1991 (High School), I was blessed to have had both recess and physical education classes. I can imagine that if they were not present in my childhood my life would be much different. Recess has life time ramifications and as a society we should protest when it is cut out of students lives-whether permanently or partially.  Recess allows students to have a break. Students can release tremendous amounts of energy during recess. Doing so helps students stay on task in school, ultimately helping them to be successful in school. Having recess outside exposes students to nature, something that is necessary for our well-being. Try staying indoors with no access to natural light for extended periods of time and see how you feel.  Recess serves as a stress

Gremlins: Do They Exist? A Book Review of Taming Your Gremlin

This quarter I had the pleasure of reading Taming Your Gremlin by Rick Carson for one of my PhD electives. This book should be on the shelf of every human being. This book helps people understand what lies just beyond that surface, "our gremlins" a.k.a. the things that prevent us from being happy and reaching our potential.  "Gremlins" act like a second voice, a naysayer, a roadblock and/or blindfold. They prevent us from seeing reality, living reality, and led us down a path of unhappiness and/or destruction. Automatically one might think that "Gremlins" are our negative thoughts, but Carson points out that they are "source of them" and they use our fears to prevent us from seeing our future positively (Carson, 2008).  Carson provides the reader with three key ways to battle these "Gremlins":  Simply Noticing  Choosing  Playing with Options Being in Process (Carson, 2008). One of the greatest takeaways from the book is

Is this for REAL? 1 in 10 Deaths

Should Lack Of Exercise Be Considered A Medical Condition? After reading this article all I could keep thinking is this for real, 1 in 10 deaths in the world today can be contributed to "inactivity". Sad but true. As a former inactive person, I can testify how "inactivity" affected my health: increased stress, blood pressure, cholesterol, and additional 10 pounds over five years. Although many of these were related to life stresses (job and deaths), they were ultimately impacted by me departed motivation for exercise. Excuses were made and my body paid the price.  Now that I have recommitted myself to getting at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week. I have seen improvement: decrease weight, the condition of my skin has improved, better sleep, and increased energy.  Although this is a tougher feat as I approach 40, its one that should be nonnegotiable in all of our lives.

Quitting is not an Option

Too many of us quit before we have finished the race. Life is full of many track races! Some are 400's and others are a marathon.  The question for every person who runs the races of life is not how fast you run, but whether you give your heart into every race before you hang up your running shoes.  Photo Reference:  http://www.motivateus.com/images/no-giving-up.jpg

Taxing Those That Achieve Gold

Lawmakers Fight Olympic Medal Tax | NBC 10 Philadelphia : 'via Blog this' Are they serious? No they should not. Olympians sacrifice A LOT so we can spend hours being proud Americans! The cost of training I suspect is unbelievable-in time and money and anything they get from bringing home the GOLD should not be TAXED!
